U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback kicked off his general election campaign for Kansas governor on Thursday by planning a 105-county tour of the state by November.

On the other side, Democrat challenger, state Sen. Tom Holland of Baldwin City sent a letter to the Brownback campaign, inviting Brownback to 10 debates across the state.

Holland’s campaign asked for one debate in each Congres-sional District, “each hosted and moderated by a nonpartisan group, media outlet or academic institution.”

At the same time, Brownback’s campaign announced they would unveil a four-day, 32-city bus tour across the state.

“Next week, we will unveil the Road Map for Kansas and kick off a four day, 32 city bus tour covering more than 1,000 miles across Kansas,” Brownback said in a statement. “This plan will share common sense steps we can take to grow our economy, promote excellence in education, reform government and protect families.”

Holland cited that, in 1994, Brownback debated Sheila Frahm 10 times during the U.S. Senate campaign. He said that he “admired (Brownback’s) willingness to engage in those debates.”
“I look forward to an equally rigorous discussion on the issues,” Holland said.

Brownback said that, by Election Day, he plans to have been to all 105 counties with his “Road Map for Kansas” tour, saying that he will be “meeting face to face with Kansans and having real conversations about how to make our great state better.”

Holland replied by asking for public discussion on the issues and also said that, with relation to potential debates, former Lt. Gov. Tom Docking would help to negotiate debate parameters for any potential meetings between the two candidates.

Brownback has agreed to one debate, to be held at the Kansas State Fair, at 11 a.m., Sept. 11 in Hutchinson.
