The Wellington Police Department is searching for the final resting place of two people in hopes of returning their headstones to their property place.
On March 2nd, two headstones were brought to the Wellington Police station after being found in a rental home in town, Sgt. Dan Thompson said.
A number of previous tenants have been contacted, but no one is claiming to know where they came from, Thompson said. The headstones were found in a shed in the back of the property.
The headstones are both from the late 1800s. The first is for a J. Addison, who was 34 years old. His headstone simply reads “J. Addison 1884-1918.”
The other headstone is for 1 year-old Adlaska Childers. More decorated than the Addison’s, his headstone reads, “Adlaska, Son of C.C. & S.L Childers, Aug. 14, 1896, Oct. 6, 1897, Gone but not forgotten.”
“Basically we are trying to put it out through the media to see if anyone knows or remembers these people or a family member comes forward,” said Thompson.
The police officer says he’s not looking to find who removed the stones, but to put the headstones where they belong.
“At this point I’m really not worried about who stole them, I’m just trying to get them back to where they go,” Thompson said. “I doubt anyone is going to step up and say they went to a cemetery and stole headstones.”
Thompson hopes those in the public with the skills to do research will come to the aid of the local police department.
“I’m kind of hoping that if we put it out there in the paper that other people will take an interest in it. I hate to say that it’s low priority … but we have more things that take more of our time. Our hope is that if we get it out there, some of these other people will be able to help us out and maybe tell us where they go,” Thompson said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt. Dan Thompson with the Wellington Police Department at 620-326-3331.
