The case of a two-year-old Wellington girl, that passed away last week, has officially shifted from charges of abuse, to murder. Spencer J. Weikal, 23, of Wellington was arrested last Wednesday.
"[The charges] were amended from the Aggravated Battery and Child Abuse to, I believe, Murder in the First Degree, Abuse of a Child, and Aggravated Endangerment of a Child," said Wellington Police Chief, Tracy Heath. The name of the girl has not yet officially been released. Weikal was arraigned on Dec. 2, and his next court date is set for Dec. 8 at 9 a.m. at the Sumner County Court House.
"The investigation is still open, the investigators are still doing interviews...and following up, and just preparing a case...to get into the hands of the County attorney," Heath said.
On Nov. 30, last Wednesday, shortly after 1 a.m. County authorities received word that a two-year-old was treated at Sumner Regional Medical Center, then transported to Wichita in critical condition.
"The child was transported from SRMC by Wellington EMS to Wesley medical center," Heath said. "Once the child arrived, given the nature of the injuries, Wesley authorities immediately notified Wichita P.D..." Once they responded to the hospital and got an assessment of what was being alleged, Sumner County and Wellington authorities were notified.
With assistance from Wichita police, local officers were lead to a Wellington residence where Weikal was located. He was questioned and eventually arrested at 2:21 p.m. on Nov. 30.
