Neil L. Young, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, May 13, 2012.
He was born on November 3, 1929 to Ora and Emmer (nee Eden) Young. He served in the United States Navy from 1947 to 1951. He married Roberta Riege on November 21, 1954 in Wellington, Kansas.
Mr. Young was a member of the Wellington Fire Department for 27 years, where he served as Chief since 1967, before his retirement in 1984. He served 12 years as a City Councilman and dedicated his life to serving his community and its residents.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta; a son, Jeff of Palm Beach, Florida; a daughter, Neila (Mrs. Eric Forssberg) of Overland Park, Kansas; a grandson, Eli Neil; and a granddaughter, Georgia Grace.
He was a lifetime member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the American Legion, and the First Christian Church. He attended the University of Kansas and Oklahoma State University.
Donations and memorials should be made in his memory to the Wellington Fire Department which was such a considerable part of his life and service.
He will be truly missed.
Funeral Services will be held at the First Christian Church in Wellington on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. Pastor Don Bryant will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 from 3:00 – 8:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.
