The Wellington Police Department (WPD) is trying to solve the case involving a local purse-snatcher.
On June 15, at the Wellington Dillon's, a man was caught on tape stealing a woman's purse.
"This is where the guy actually waits for the lady to turn her back and he then takes her purse out of the cart, then he exits the store," said Wellington Police Chief, Tracy Heath. There are also four other cases where women who have been shopping, leave their purse or wallet in the cart, leave the store only to return and find some money has been removed. The WPD does not consider the matters to be related to the incident caught on tape.
"I don't believe that they are," Heath said, then described what was seen on the surveillance footage.
"She [the victim] is actually back in the meat department, her cart is kind setting off in the middle of the isle, she steps and walks away and she's looking at the products," Heath explained. "The guy, as he walks by he just kind of reaches over and grabs the purse and puts it in his cart." The man then goes down another isle, and exits the store.
Heath said if anyone has any information on the robbery, or can identify the assailant, they are asked to contact the WPD at 620-326-3331. The chief said the likelihood of any contents being recovered is doubtful at this point, but they are still investigating the incident.
"We'd like to try to get him identified," Heath said.
