Mitchell O. Skaggs, of Wellington, Kansas, died Friday, June 29, 2012 at Golden Living Center in Wellington, Kansas at the age of 93. He was born the son of Hayward, Sr. and Lola (Little) Skaggs on Thursday, April 17, 1919 in Enid, Oklahoma.
Mitchell danced when he was a child and always wished he could have gone further with that talent. Mitchell served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He played the trumpet and met Billie when he went to her uncle’s music store in Wichita. Her uncle introduced them and they were married on November 20, 1942 in Newton, Kansas when Billie was just 15 and Mitchell was 23. Over the years, Mitchell and Billie lived in Numa, OK, Wichita, KS, Austin, TX, Ponca City, OK and more than forty years in Wellington. Billie always worked either at home or with Mitchell. They ran a grocery store in Numa, an elevator in Numa and later one in Wellington, and Billie was secretary for Mitchell as he practiced reflexology. Mitchell and Billie also enjoyed genealogy, traveling all over the country doing research. They loved animals and had many pets. Bulldogs Syndi and Penny and cats Felix and Callie. They enjoyed driving around Wellington and drinking a coke. He was a proud to be a Mason and belonged to the Grand Lodge of Oklahoma for 68 years. Mitchell had a fun personality and always joked and kidded; and later in life the nurses had to watch out for his quick hands. Mitchell especially enjoyed visits from his great-great nephew, Matthew.
Survivors include his sister-in-law, Shirley Skaggs of Medford, Oklahoma; niece, Judy Neal and her husband Dale of Blackwell, Oklahoma; nephew, Larry Skaggs and his wife Candy of Nash, Oklahoma; great-nieces, Tammy Adamson of Geary, Oklahoma, Sharon Pryce and her husband Kevin of Wellington, Kansas, Paula Lattimer and her husband Eugene of Hunnewell, Kansas, Teena Bergdall and her husband Greg of Enid, Oklahoma and his great-nephew, Larry Skaggs, Jr. and his wife Amy of Oxford, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Billie Jean Skaggs; daughter, Linda Kay Skaggs and two brothers: Hayward Skaggs, Jr. and Eugene Skaggs.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, July 2, 2012.
Graveside services for Mitchell will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 3, 2012 in the Rosemound Cemetery, Medford, Oklahoma.
