Paul Eugene Cantrell, 89, devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington, Kansas.
Paul was born the son of M.C. and Jonnie Cantrell on September 27, 1922 at the family home near Ripley, Oklahoma. He graduated from Ripley High School and joined the Air Force where he served 4 years.
On June 21, 1944, he and Bonnie Perry were united in marriage in Stillwater, Oklahoma. They celebrated 68 years of marriage. Paul was raised in a Christian home and has been a faithful member of the Methodist Church for over 50 years. He became a member of the Wellington church in 1973 having served on the Ad Council and one term as President of the Searchers Class. Paul was a dedicated church usher until his health forced him to give up the position. He will lovingly be remembered by many young adults as the “candy man.” Paul was proud of his membership in the American Legion.
He loved sports and played both football and baseball in high school. Paul later went on to coach several girls’ softball teams, including the church team, in the 1970’s. He was great at fishing and camping and enjoyed the many winters spent in Southern Texas near Mercedes and the summers spent in Buena Vista, Colorado.
Paul worked as a farmer, carpenter and was employed for 14 years as the Maintenance Foreman at the City of Wellington Power Plant. Following his time with the city, Paul went on to work at Plessey Welco doing maintenance and carpentry for 11 years. He retired in 1988.
He loved his family and was especially fond of all his grandchildren. Nearly every grandchild has something that Grandpa made for them.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Cantrell of the home; daughters, Meda Chism (Terry) of Everett, Washington, Beverly Coleman (Dean) of Overland Park, Kansas; son, Bob Cantrell (Connie) of Pensacola, Florida; grandchildren, Michael Chism of Lake Stevens, Washington, Meri Farmer (Darek) of Lynnwood, Washington, Phillip Cantrell (Angela) of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Jennifer Falette (Jason) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Tracie Birks (Oren) of Olathe, Kansas, Kristin Haynes (Joseph) of Olathe, Kansas, ten great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many loving friends.
