Thanks to a committee led by Mitch McComb, WHS will soon sport a sign bearing the names and dates of all team and individual State Championships. The USD 353 School Board approved placement of the 18 x 24 foot sign at the August 9 meeting. Costs of approximately $5000 will be covered by the committee's activities.
The Board also approved the request of David Carr, Impact Bank, for a sign on the west side of the press box to include the sponsoring name and logo. Cost will be born by Impact Bank.
WHS students who have applied for early graduation in December 2012 were approved. According to the Board, students graduating early will be included in the selection of Valedictorian and Salutatorian.
After lengthy discussion and input from Dale Adams, WHS Principal, the Board approved the policy of new students being eligible for Valedictorian and Salutatorian if 14 of 28 core requirements were achieved at WHS. Adams stated his support of multiple Valedictorians with no Salutatorian based on grades in the core classes. One Valedictorian and multiple Salutatorians would also be a possibility. Dissenting votes were from Angie Ratcliff and Maria Cornejo.
The Board approved two school-related fundraisers. WHS Cheerleaders will be selling T shirts through September to defray the expenses of cheerleading. Stephanie Lawrence is the sponsor.
A carwash and bakesale was to be held August 11 and a T shirt sale will occur throughout the volleyball season to provide for related supplies, materials, and uniforms for the volleyball teams. Cherity Elder is the sponsor.
USD 353 Building Handbooks were approved with the addition of the Pacemaker Program under direction of Zane Aguilar at Roosevelt School. The Board noted the need for all Handbooks to be made available on the District website.
Board President Jackie Berryman clarified Board Policy and Board purpose as liaison between the school and the community. All complaints received by Board members individually should be channeled to the Superintendent. In case of a personnel complaint, the complaint should be referred to the correct person. It is not the role of the Board to discipline employees.
The Board discussed a proposal by Member Angie Ratcliff regarding increasing communication between the community and the Board.
The next regularly scheduled USD 353 School Board is scheduled for Thursday, September 13, 7:00 p.m., at the District Office.
