  • Nationally it's Anti-Bullying week, locally Wellington High School is participating by raising bullying awareness and prevention.
Karla Defore, Social Studies Teacher at WHS brought the idea of Anti-bullying week to school administrators.
"It doesn't matter if we've got a bullying problem, we need to do some prevention," she said. "The kids were really excited about that." Each day this week WHS will be doing something to keep bully awareness at the forefront of student's minds.  Defore said a person might not know if they are bullying someone else.
"That's the purpose of the awareness campaign," she said. "You think something is kind of clever or funny, or you're just kidding, but it isn't always taken that way."  In the digital age, bullying isn't just limited to school buildings with social media websites being as popular as they are.
"We want them to understand that bullying isn't just 'give me your lunch money!'" Defore said. "It's being isolated, the kids that feel like they don't have anyone to eat lunch with, the person that's worried about what someone will say about them on Facebook." Defore said the best way for the community to get involved with the anti-bullying movement is to communicate with their children.
"Talk to your kids about it, have a conversation at dinner," the teacher said. "Prevent a problem before it's a problem."
