Betty Hackney Thompson, 96, of Wellington, Kansas, and Phoenix, Arizona, passed peacefully into the arms of Our Lord on Nov. 19, 2012 with family nearby. She was born, raised and educated in rural Wellington, Kansas in 1916, on the pioneer Hackney family homestead. She the graduated from Pittsburg Kansas State Teachers College and went on to teach in the Wellington, Sedan, and Russell, Kansas school districts. She met and married her husband of 44 years, Burl W. Thompson, in 1942, while teaching in Sedan. Betty returned to Wellington to live and teach while Burl served in the Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II. They continued to reside in Wellington after the war where their four children, Franklin B. Thompson, now of Overland Park, Kansas, Barbara Pasciak, of Pearland, Texas, Donna Vandergrift, of Glendale, Arizona, and Kendall R. Thompson, of Phoenix, Arizona. Betty continued to teach in Cartwright School District until her retirement in 1981. Betty, Burl and family were active members of First Methodist Church in Wellington, KS. and Epworth United Methodist Church in Glendale, AZ. Betty was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and was elected to Kappa Delta Pi, the National Teacher's Fraternity. Due to life changes, Betty moved to Pearland, TX. in 2006 to be near her daughter Barbara.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Frank S. and Maude Hackney, her brothers Robert and Philip Hackney, her sisters Prudence Sawyer and Jane Bradley, and her husband, Burl.She is survived by her 4 children, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 8th, 2012 from 1-2 pm at Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary with funeral services at 2 pm. 7924 N. 59th Ave, Glendale, Arizona 85301. Mom was a devoted wife, mother, teacher, and friend. She will always be loved and held dear in our hearts and prayers.
