Doña Jeronima Mendia, age 101, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away at her home on Jefferson Street, December 7, 2012. She was a Wellington resident and homemaker for 66 years.
Doña Jeronima Mendia was born on July 30, 1911 in San Julian, Jalisco, Mexico to Fortino Martin and Eliboria Gutierrez.
She attended school and worked in a hosiery and sock factory in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico. She married Gregorio Lopez Mendia in 1944 and came to America in 1946, at the age of 35 with her infant, Alfonso. She became a U.S. Citizen in 1996.
She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and participated in numerous fund-raising projects such as Mexican food suppers, the Wellington Mexican Independence Day Fiestas at the Memorial Auditorium in the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. Mrs. Mendia enjoyed crocheting, sewing, quilting, and making useful items for her extended family. She also enjoyed making tasty, wonderful foods such as peach pies and Mexican empanadas in the middle of hot Kansas summers as well as favorites like enchiladas.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, son Raul Arturo Lopez Mendia, six brothers: Miguel Martin, Uwaldo Martin, Manuel Martinez, Daniel Martinez, Narciso Martinez, Jose de la Luz Pedrosa, and four sisters: Felipa Martin, Pascuala Martin, Carmen Martinez, and Cornelia Martinez.
Survivors include three sons, Alfonso Jesus Lopez Mendia (Sandra) of Wellington KS; Erasmo Lopez Mendia of Wichita, KS; Humberto Lopez Mendia (Marie) of Chandler AZ; two daughters Aurora Jeronima Lopez Mendia (Ray) of Wichita KS and Maria de Lourdes Lopez Mendia of Rockford, IL, 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m, Monday, December 10, 2012. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 5:30 p.m., Monday evening in the chapel of Day Funeral Home, Wellington, Kansas.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at St. Anthony/St. Rose Catholic Church, Wellington, Kansas. Father Lawrence Carney will officiate.
Interment will follow at the Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Wellington, Kansas.
A memorial has been established in her name and loving memory with Friendship Meals, 308 South Washington, Wellington, Kansas 67152. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
