  • Foster Larry “Fos” Mears, 77, of Norwich, retired FAA Air Traffic Controller, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, KS.
    Larry was born June 18, 1935 at Milan, Kansas the only child of Foster Latham Mears and Clara Mae Paisley Mears.  He grew up in Milan and attended grade school at Milan before moving to Wellington where he graduated from Wellington High School with the class of 1953.
    Larry entered the U.S. Navy on April 20, 1954 where he honorably served his country until his discharge on April 16, 1958.
    Larry was united in marriage to Elaine M. Murphy on February 6, 1960 at Hays, Kansas. They made their first home in Hays while Larry attended Fort Hays State University. He graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and History.
    Larry became an Air Traffic Controller while he was in the Navy.  He pursued his love of Air Traffic Control and became a civilian Air Traffic Controller. Later he became an Air Traffic Instructor at the FAA Center in Oklahoma City, OK until he retired in 1990.
    Larry was preceded in death by his Father, Foster on December 12, 1969 and his Mother, Clara Mears on Dec. 21, 1969.
    He  is survived by his wife Elaine of the home; two sons: Ron Mears and his wife Suzanne, Jim Mears all of Roeland Park, Kansas, one daughter, Shelly and husband Mitch Hewitt, of Norwich, Kansas; six grandchildren: Lauren, Mason, Trenton, Chloe, Kelcey and Maddie.
    Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 17, 2012 from the Norwich Baptist Church, with Pastor Eric Taylor, officiating.  Interment was in Milan Cemetery, Milan, Kansas.     Memorials have been established to the Norwich Baptist Church or the Norwich EMS.
