  • Lady-Crusaders blowout Augusta
    Augusta's offense was still on Winter break, as AHS fell 49-24 to the Lady-Crusaders in Wellington on Jan. 4.
    Wellington jumped out to a big lead on the Lady-Orioles early in the game, and had amassed a 14-4 lead by the end of the first quarter. Augusta didn't have a player score more than four points during the contest, while Wellington had two score in the double digits.
    Carlie McComb, junior, was the top scorer in the game with 15 points, all but one point came from field goals. Kailey Jenkins, senior, was the game's second leading scoring with 13 points, bolstered by three, three-point buckets.
    Augusta had three players with a total of four points on Friday night. Abby Tipton, junior, Casady Marlnee, junior, and Taylor Childers, senior.
    Wellington was able to push the tempo of the game all night long by rotating in fresh players off the bench, with different sets of key players on the floor at all times. Augusta never found the answer. Wellington in large part was carried by the eight three-point shots that the team made.
    The Lady-Crusaders shot 50 percent from the free-throw line on Friday, Augusta shot 28 percent.

    Crusaders bounced by Orioles
    For a few fleeting moments in the fourth quarter, it looked like Wellington was going to come back on the Augusta Orioles on Jan. 4, but it never materialized. Augusta won on the road 59-57.
    There were two deflating, back-breaking buckets from Augusta in the fourth quarter. The first came just after Wellington clawed back to make it a two possession game with just under four minutes to go. Kyler Steinkamp, junior, dropped in two of this total eight points on the night to put Augusta up 49-43.
    Connor Hurst, sophomore, put  the game out of reach after scoring two of his game leading 16 points with 1:43 to go in the game, putting the Orioles up 53-45. Hurst's efforts were aided at the free-throw line, where he shot five for seven on Friday.
    Wellington outscored Augusta inside, scoring 28 points to Augusta's 22 from two-point range, however, the Orioles blasted the Crusaders on the boards all night, nabbing rebound after rebound on both ends of the floor.
    Augusta had another player reach double-digits, Kresten Trebbe bucketed 10 points on the evening. Wellington only had one player score more than 10 points, Nick Becker, senior, lead the Crusaders with 14 points. Eleven of Becker's points came in the opening quarter, he was shut out in the second and third quarter.
