It was 24-19, Wellington had the lead all the way through the first half despite a surge late in the second by Kingman. Immediately after the break, Wellington dropped back-to-back-to-back three-pointers in the bucket and began to pull away to a 19-point win over the one seed at the Chaparral Road Runner Classic.
The Crusaders had a much better showing in the second round of the tournament compared to the first where they only scored 27 points; failing to score in the double-digits in any quarter in the opening round against Clearwater. On Jan. 18 verses Kingman, they broke the double-digit mark in each quarter.
When these two teams played in early December, Wellington won by five, 58-53.
Nick Becker, senior, from Wellington lead all scorers in the contest with 11 points. As for the pivotal trilogy of three-pointers to begin the second half, two were bucketed by Alex Weiss, senior, the other by Tyler Miles, senior. Wellington was on fire from downtown, 21 of their points came from beyond the arch. The Crusaders were solid from the free-throw line also, shooting 63 percent.
Next up for WHS is a game against either Belle Plaine or the host team Chaparral High School at 2:30 on Saturday, Jan. 19.
