Girls win with authority in Wichita

It's tough to tell which was better for Wellington's Lady-Crusaders on Tuesday night – the offense or defense. Both were impressive on the road against Wichita Collegiate School.

The Wellington team achieved its highest point total of the 2012-13 season so far on Feb. 12. The final score was 64-27. There were three Lady-Crusaders with double-digit points, Kailey Jenkins, senior, with 14; and juniors, Avery Lewellen with 13 and Kelsey Whaley with 10.

With the pedal to the metal on offense, WHS already had a 25-point lead built up heading into halftime. The Lady-Crusaders put up 19 points in each of the first two quarters, holding Collegiate to seven and six, respectively.

It didn't get much better for the Lady-Spartans, who lost to Wellington in Dec. 2012 by a score of 41-30 at WHS. Collegiate only mustered five points in the third quarter, to Wellington's 18, but did outscore the visiting team 9-8 in the fourth quarter.

Up next for the 11-6 Lady-Crusaders is a home game against Clearwater. A team that got the better of WHS in December by a narrow margin of five points. Wellington returned the favor on Jan. 26 at the Mulvane Wildcat Classic, handing CHS a 34-26 defeat. Varsity action is set to tip-off at 6 p.m. at the high school on Friday, Feb. 15.

Boys lose to Spartans

Eight points is all the separated the Wellington Crusaders from the Wichita Collegiate Spartans on Feb. 12. Two players in double-digits wasn't enough to get the victory on the road for WHS.

Wichita Collegiate won the contest 59-51. Wellington was lead again on offense by Trevor Nance, sophomore, who had 16 points. Coupled with the game before Collegiate, against Andale, Nance has combined for 35 points in the last two games. Senior, Tyler Miles also had a solid offensive night with 12 points on Tuesday.

The eight-point loss is an improvement verses the Spartans, who clobbered Wellington by 20 in Dec. 2012.

The road doesn't get any easier for WHS, as it winds back home for a game against Clearwater – a team that has already defeated WHS twice this season. The Indians beat the Crusaders 54-27 on Jan. 16, and 51-44 in December.
