Elvira Z. "Vera' Venegas, 84, of Arkansas City, died Tuesday (February 19, 2013) at the South Central Kansas Medical Center of Arkansas City. The Rosary will be recited 8:00 p.m. Friday (February 22, 2013) and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday both at Sacred heart Catholic Church. Father Michael Clark will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hope Cemetery of Arkansas City.
Vera was born November 29, 1928, in Wellington, Kansas, to Doroteo and Julia (Ramirez) Zavala. She was reared and educated in Wellington. She married Primo Venegas on October 16, 1947, in Newkirk. The couple has made their home in Wellington, Arkansas City and Newkirk throughout the years. Vera was a homemaker and very active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Vera also would interpret for many different organizations in Arkansas City.
Survivors include her loving husband of 65 years Primo, Sr., of the home; adoring children Primo, Jr. of Arkansas City, Mario, Sr. and his wife Shirley Venegas of Newkirk; two brothers Elias Zavala of Wichita, Dorotheo "Gabby" Zavala of Wellington; grandchildren Christopher Venegas, Miechelle Venegas, Devin Walker, Daniel Walker, Maria Venegas, Mario Venegas, II, and Marcello Venegas; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughters Vita Walker, Clare Venegas, grandson Mark Venegas, great-grandchild Damian Walker, brothers Pete, Willie, Joe, and Chevo Zavala, and sisters Mary Zavala, and Esther Leffel.
A memorial has been established with Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
