Dorothy M. (Taylor) Shetlar, 96, of Conway Springs

Conway Springs – Dorothy M. (Taylor) Shetlar, 96, died Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Spring View Manor, Conway Springs, where she had been a resident since February of 2012.

Dorothy was born March 17, 1916 at Ashton, Kansas to Robert Earl Taylor and Laura Elizabeth (Garman) Taylor. She was the fifth of eight children. At the age of eight, her family moved to Conway Springs. She graduated from Conway Springs High School in 1934. She subsequently took the county teacher exam and taught at various country schools for the next three years.

On May 16, 1937 she married Luther Francis Shetlar and they made their home together on the Shetlar Dairy Farm and Orchard located southwest of Conway Springs for the next 61 years. Luther and Dorothy operated the dairy for 45 years until 1987. During that time their registered Holstein's were sold across the nation as well as to Mexico, Venezuela, Spain and Japan. Luther died April 14, 1998. Dorothy moved into Conway Springs to make her home at 318 S. 7th St.

Dorothy was an active member in the United Methodist Church, Conway Springs. She took pride in being, for a number of years, the longest standing member and attended services faithfully till her health declined. At the time of her death, she was also the oldest living alumna of Conway Springs High School.

Dorothy was also preceded in death by six brothers: Samuel, Robert, Everette, Milton, Mike, and Ralph and one sister Anna Schroeder.

She is survived by her three children Dr. Martin Shetlar and wife Margie of San Anselmo, CA; Anne Olmstead Rush and husband Phil of Conway Springs, KS; James Shetlar MD and wife Janet of Frankenmuth, MI; as well as seven grandchildren; Eddie Gene Olmstead, Roseanne Olmstead, Amy Jimenez, Michael Shetlar, Marisa Burghdoff, Sarah Shetlar, James Shetlar; seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013 from the United Methodist Church, Conway Springs, with Rev. Michael W. Roberts, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Conway Springs Cemetery, Conway Springs. Arrangements are by Ebersole Mortuary, Conway Springs. On line condolences and guest book are available
