One came home with a sixth place medal.

Two against the State, that was the story for Jason Haydon, senior, and Taylon Lamkin, junior from Wellington High School. Each of them earned a trip to Salina to compete in the 2013 4A State Wrestling Tournament.

Lamkin (195 lb.) took home the sixth place medal from Salina in his first appearance at the State Tournament. He dropped his opening round match against Gavin Houser, senior, from Columbus High School, but then went on a tear.

With a 3-2 decision against Zack Carter, sophomre, from Basehor-Linwood High School, a 6-1 decision verses Bradley Campbell, junior, from Hugoton; Lamkin was up against Cody Howell, senior, from Chanute. Howell was no match for the WHS Crusader, as he was pinned in three minutes, 34 seconds.

Next was a face-off where the winner would advance to the third place match. Lamkin wrestled against Derrick Gates, senior, from AVCTL rival Andale. Gates pinned Lampkin in four minutes, 28 seconds, sending the WHS junior to the fifth place bout.

Lampkin would lose to John Metcalf, senior, from Fort Scott by a decision of 2-1.

For Haydon (160 lb.) this was his third year competing at the highest level in 4A wrestling. His record coming into the tournament was 20-7. Haydon had been hampered by injury leading up to the event.

In the opening round on Feb. 22, Haydon was defeated by Spencer Bird of Smoky Valley. The WHS senior then moved on to the loser's bracket, where Zack Roark, freshman from Columbus High School, ended Haydon's stint at State.
