She entered the contest ranked the ninth best high jumper in the country, but Wichita State University's J'Lynn Ledesma, junior, from Wellington, left the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a 14th place finish.
The event was held in Fayetteville, Ark. at the University of Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Complex. Ledesma's best jump on March 8 was 5'10," three and a quarter inches off her personal record of 6' 1.25."
Taking home the indoor high jump championship was Brigetta Barrett, senior, from the University of Arizona with a jump of 6' 4.75." Had Ledesma matched her personal best, it would have landed her in line with her national ranking entering the contest, at ninth place.
Ledesma told GoShockers.com that her first appearance on the NCAA championship stage was nerve-racking.
"It felt good to be here, just to make it," she told the website. "I'm not really content with my performance but I have three more NCAA championships to compete at, so I hope they go better for me." Now it's on to outdoor competition for the Shockers track and field team. For the track and field schedule, visit www.goshockers.com.
