At 2:15 p.m. emergency crews responded to the scene at 422 S. H Street, a house owned by Anthony Stringer.
"Upon arrival fire crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from two windows on the northeast corner of the structure," reads a statement from the Wellington Fire and EMS Department.
One person was home at the time of the fire, but was able to make it out in time with no injuries.
"Crews made entry and extinguished the fire located in the living room and kitchen area on the house," the statement continues. "The fire extended into the attic and required extensive overhaul to extinguish smoldering insulation." Two pet cats did not make it through the incident.
Wellington Police Department, Sumner County Emergency Management, City of Wellington Electric Department, Kansas Gas Service, and the American Red Cross all assisted with putting the fire out.
