  • I just don’t get it.
I’ve heard so many people say it in so many ways this week.
They love being unplugged, offline, off the grid, or out of reach. I can’t stand it. I know I am supposed to be on vacation. I know I am supposed to enjoy this cruise with my mom’s entire family. But why can’t I do that while staying plugged in?
I like being plugged in. I love my job. I love doing it.
I don’t want to be lost at sea. I have things to do. Those things require some connectivity.
I do appreciate the fact that Royal Caribbean makes wireless internet available while we’re sailing. But does it really have to cost 65 cents per minute?
I find myself sitting here planning what emails to send and feeling like I am racing with the devil after I submit my password to start a new session.
Some people feel free when they can’t use their phones or computers. I feel trapped. I like being able to log on, find out everything is going all right and log off. I relax when I know everything is taken care of – not when I can avoid taking care of it.
There are so many reasons to stay in touch even when you are far away and supposed to be relaxing.
It is hard for me to relax when I’m off the grid. I like the grid. I like knowing what is going on and that none of the problems of the world need me to fix them.
I’m probably a workaholic and/or and information addict.
But that is what makes me happy.
So I will keep trying. I will log on and dance through emails, check my newspapers’ websites, try to catch up with what is happening in the world and log off – quickly.
I will send a couple of columns and a story or two and that will help me enjoy my vacation more.
Maybe you like it better off the grid. That’s fine.
It’s just less crowded when I am on it.
