  • It may have not felt like a good day for a tennis tournament with a chill in the air, but the players were on the courts in Wellington, where the home team took the title.
The WHS boys tennis team finished with 36 points in first place, edging out Goddard-Eisenhower High School who had 31 points.
Wellington featured a couple of first place performances in individual and doubles events. Brian Peck, senior, won the Number One Singles bracket going 4-0 on the day.
The Crusader duo of Jon Ryberg, sophomore, and Tyler Pettegrew, sophomore, won the Number One Doubles competition, also going 4-0 at Wellington's only home contest.
Sophomore, Dutch Brownlee took home a second place medal in Number Two Singles, going 3-1 on the afternoon; only losing to Goddard-Eisenhower. Chaz Crittenden, senior, and Anthony Glazer, junior also took second place with a 3-1 record in Number Two Doubles.
As for the rest of the teams in Wellington yesterday, there weren't many points to go around after the first and second place finishers. El Dorado took home third place with 14 points, Kingman finished fourth with eight points, followed by Augusta in fifth with two points.
Next up for the WHS tennis team is a tournament at Chaparral on April 2.
"Everyone played really well," said Head Coach, Allen Keller. "If we continue to improve every 3 weeks at the rate we have the first 3 weeks, I'm very optimistic about our chances the rest of the season."
