  • It was a beautiful day for a baseball game at Hibbs-Hooten field in Sellers Park, but unfortunately for the home team, the day would end ugly. Wellington lost each of games in a double-header to open the season on March 28 against Mulvane.
For the opener, Alex Weiss, senior, took the mound for WHS to start the game. He fired off two strikes in a row, but Mulvane's Nolan Smith would get an infield base hit on a 2-2 count, and the Wildcats were off to the races, scoring three runs in the top of the first.
In the bottom of the first inning, Wellington went three up, three down, with no hits thanks to the arm of Mulvane's Alex Evans, senior. WHS only managed two hits for the entirety of game one as Evans took the win.
In the next inning, Mulvane didn't miss a beat. Ty Redington, senior, and fourth batter up in the inning, knocked the ball out of the park in left field, approximately 320', on the first pitch he saw from Weiss. The play earned the Wildcats two more runs.
Later, in the top of the fourth, Collin Dempsey, junior, lead-off for Mulvane who lead 5-0. On an 1-0 count, he hit a 320-footer of his own over the left field wall. WHS gave up another run in the seventh, and lost to MHS 7-0 in game one. Weiss takes the loss on the mound. Mulvane scored their seven runs off of 11 hits.
In game two, things were a little more competitive, Mulvane took a 4-2 lead into the fourth, which turned into a 5-4 lead when that inning was over. Wellington was shut out of the next two innings, scored two in the seventh but the Wildcats doubled their point total in that same inning.
Mulvane scored 12 on 15 hits, WHS tallied six points on seven hits. Zach Haynes, senior, gets the win for Mulvane at the mound, Wellington Blane Anderson, senior, takes the loss.
Next up for WHS is a double-header at home on April 2 against Augusta, starting at 4 p.m.
