Starting the season off 4-0? Not too bad. That's what the Wellington Lady-Crusaders Softball team has done after two sets of double-headers. The second sweep came against Andale on April 8, when WHS won 6-0 in game one, and 6-5 in game two.
Shanlyn Hefley, senior, pitched the complete shutout in game one, only giving up three hits. She is now 2-0 on the season. Hefley also got the save in game two. Wellington held a 1-0 lead after one inning, through the fourth where they added two. The last three runs came in sixth.
At the plate, a pair of seniors lead the way. Kailey Jenkins went 2/2, with a double, two runs-batted-in, and one run; she also went 4/4 in game two. Savannah Cornejo went 1/2, with an RBI and a score.
In game two, WHS picked up where they left off, but Andale woke up in the later innings.
Wellington scored six runs through two innings, and that's all they needed. The Lady-Indians made a push at a comeback, scoring four of the five runs in the last two innings.
Jenkins gets the "W," her second of the year, Hefley is credited with the save. In the batter's box, a couple freshmen were causing problems for the opposition. Ryleigh Buck sent her second homerun of the year over the fence, accounted for two RBI, and one run. McKenna Oathout went 2/2, doubled had an RBI and scored a run.
Next for WHS is a home match-up against Winfield at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 15. Then they travel to Rose Hill on April 18 to make up the would-be season opener.
