The Lady-Crusaders are 6-0.
Putting up double-digit runs in a softball game isn't the most common occurrence. To do it twice in back-to-back games? That just means the Lady-Crusaders are 6-0.
Wellington scored 10 runs in each contest of the double-header against Winfield on Monday, April 15, allowing a combined one run.
Shanlyn Hefley, senior, pitched a shut-out in game one, allowing only four hits, throwing seven strikeouts. Hefley also contributed from behind the plate, going 1/3 with an RBI, and scoring two runs.
Winfield couldn't get off of the field quick enough in the bottom of the third. Wellington rounded up six points, bringing their lead to 7-0. One more run in the fourth, and two more in the fifth and that was all she wrote.
Wellington's 10 runs came from nine hits, and the team had no errors in game one. Hefley advances to 3-0 from the pitching circle this season, so did Kailey Jenkins, senior, once the second game was over.
The second game was slightly more competitive, as the Lady-Crusaders won by nine. This time the big inning for Wellington was in the bottom of the second.
Five runs brought the lead to 6-0. Multiple players made plays with the bat in game two. Ryleigh Buck, freshman, was 3/4, with a triple, an RBI and one run. Peyton Adams, sophomore, hit a double in route to going 2/4 and scoring a run. Hefley, Jenkins, McKenna Oathout, freshman, Shelby Hambel, junior, and Carlie McComb, junior, each had an RBI in the second game.
The blistering bats in game two carried over from game one. Jenkins had 3 RBI, along with a double, going 2/3 and scoring a run. Oathout had two RBI in the first game, Buck, and McComb each had one.
Thanks to games being post-poned earlier in the season, due to weather, the Lady-Crusaders have played all of their games at home. They will face their first road test on Thursday against Rose Hill. The double-header against the Rockets was supposed to be the season opener for WHS. Will their winning ways continue away from Worden Park?
