Athletes from across Sumner County and the surrounding area were in Wellington on April 26, trying to outrun the rain during the WHS Invitational Track Meet.
The Lady-Crusaders took gold in nine individual events on Friday. Megan Campbell, senior, won the 100 and 200 meter races with times of 12.1 and 25.85. Wellington swept the 200 meter event, Holly Wright, junior, and Leah Nelson, sophomore, placed second and third. Campbell also won the 400 meter run, clocking in at 62.3 seconds.
Wright out did the competition in the 100 meter hurdles, with a time of 17.49. The Lady-Crusaders relay teams were up to their usual gold standard, winning the 4x400 meter relay, along with the 4x100.
It was a good day for WHS athletes in the field events as well. Halynn Page, junior, won the girls shot put with a throw of 32' 04''. Cajen Shore, sophomore, earned top marks in the long jump with a distance of 15' 9''. Micah Rogers, junior, jumped a 32' 04'' to win the girls triple jump contest on Friday.
The boys team featured six medalist, including a one-two finish in the pole vault competition. Seniors, Ian Stallbaumer finished first with a vault of 12', and Jason Haydon took home the silver. Kaleb Hunt, freshmen, also finished second over at the high jump pit, with a leap of 5' 8''.
A couple of Dukes left the home meet with bronze medals. Brenton Troutman, sophomore, did so in the 400 meter run, and Austin Pfalzgraf, sophomore, placed third in the 800.
Weather permitting, the track team has one more regular season meet. It's set for May 3, in Goddard; after that it's time fore regionals on May 17, the location is to be determined.
