Racquets ripped through the air at Riverside Tennis Center in Wichita, Kan. on Monday, April 29 for the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League tennis tourney. Wellington's team placed fifth in the contest.
"We knew we did not match up head to head with any of those four teams so our expectations of doing better than fifth were not very high," said Head Coach, Allen Keller.
McPherson won the tournament with 66 points, Wichita Collegiate Schools placed second with 57, Winfield took third with 49, and Buhler finished fourth with 43 points.
Wellington's Tyler Pettegrew, sophomore, was the only Crusader to get a first round win on Monday. He defeated Doerkson from Buhler, 7-6, and 6-1. That put him in the semi-finals of the Number Two Singles bracket. Pettegrew lost to players from Winfield, then Collegiate to finish in fourth place.
The rest of Wellington's squad did no better than sixth. Avery Chaney, sophomore, placed sixth in Number One Singles. Dutch Brownlee and Jon Ryberg, sophomores, placed sixth in Number One Doubles. The Number Two Doubles team of Chaz Crittenden, senior, and Anthony Glazer, junior, also took home sixth place.
"Overall, I have to say that both our singles players gave a good effort and played well against every opponent," Keller said. "Our doubles teams however, are really struggling with basics and until they learn to stay focused, stay positive, and play with energy and movement." The coach said his players aren't giving themselves a fighting chance against below average opponents.
"Hopefully we can get these guys back on track before the Regional tournament and start playing to our potential," Keller said.
