A fatal accident took place just North of Wellington on Monday afternoon, slightly West of the Seneca Rd. and 40th Ave. intersection where a car struck a train.
"A passenger was ejected from the vehicle and determined to be deceased on scene," says a press release from the Wellington Fire Department. Reports indicate the victim was Christina Peralez, of Wellington.
This is the second train tragedy the family has faced, as the victim's brother, Daniel Curtis Peralez, of Wellington, died at the same location, in the same fashion on Jan. 21, 2004.
After further assessment of the scene, chemicals were noticed around the scene.
"Wellington Hazardous materials technicians retrieved containers with unknown and known chemicals for testing and disposal. Technicians were also used to contain a diesel leak in a tow truck which punctured diesel tank while attempting to remove vehicle from railroad track area." The incident took place at approximately 2:15 p.m.
Other agencies assisting at the scene were the Sumner County Sheriff's Department, Belle Plaine Fire District Nine, Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad, Sumner County Emergency Management, and the Wellington Police Department.
