News to Know
A jury found Jodi Arias guilty of first-degree murder today, the Associated Press reports. Arias initially denied involvement in the killing of her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander. She then blamed the murder on masked intruders, then changed her story again and claimed she had murdered Alexander in self-defense. He was stabbed almost 30 times, shot in the forehead and had his throat slit before being stuffed in his shower. His body was found five days later by friends. Arias claimed Alexander attacked her, and she shot him in self-defense. She also claimed to have no memory of stabbing him. The jury will now deliberate on whether the murder had "aggravating" factors, such as being committed in an especially cruel or depraved manner. This will be a factor in deciding whether Arias will be executed, sentenced to life in prison, or prison with a chance of release after 25 years.
