The teams met at the beginning of the season, Wellington swept the Lady-Wildcats then, but Mulvane is headed to the 4A State Tournament now.

Upset was the theme of the day for the Lady-Crusaders, and they experienced both sides of it during the Independence 4A Regional Tournament on Tuesday, May 14. Wellington, the four-seed, knocked off the top seed Clearwater in the semi-final round - a team they had lost twice to during the regular season.

Next was the Regional Final game against Mulvane, the three-seed, whom WHS swept in the season opener several weeks ago at Worden Park.

The teams were dead-locked at zero through three innings. Mulvane got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Wellington answered with a run of their own in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Lady-Wildcats regained a one-run lead, and would add to it in the bottom of the sixth with four more runs, extending their lead to 6-1.

Wellington faced a tall-task, and came up just short of victory. They knocked in four runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough. Their season ended with the 6-5 loss to the four-seed in Independence.

The Lady-Crusaders out-hit Mulvane and had two less errors. Four WHS players had two hits in the Finals. McKenna Oathout, freshmen, Shanlyn Hefley, senior, who was on the mound for each game on Tuesday; Ryleigh Buck, freshmen, and Kailey Jenkins, senior.

In the semi-final game, Wellington and Clearwater also waited until the later innings to start scoring runs. The Lady-Crusaders took a big 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Clearwater was never able to completely answer, scoring three runs combine in the last two innings. Wellington advanced with a 6-4 win.

Seven Lady-Crusaders had hits in the ball game, two had multiple hits. Peyton Adams, sophomore, was 2/3, with one run and a double. Jenkins was 2/4, each was a double, she also had 2 RBI.

Oathout, Hefley, Ashley Collins, senior, Shelby Hamel, junior, and Carlie McComb, junior each had one hit in the semi-finals.

Wellington's overall season record for 2013 is 11-9.
