Club member Joe Black of Fayetteville, Georgia, reminded us of this old turning trick that novice turners may not be aware of. When working with soft woods such as cedar, fasten a scrap of hardwood to the turning blank so that the lathe’s tailstock has a solid area on which to fasten. Joe used No. 4 screws to attach the hardwood scrap, but you could also use hot glue or cyanoacrylate instant glue (such as Super Glue).
