Offset unhealthy school lunches with breakfast options.
Another school year is about to begin and my mind turns to school lunches. My daughter enjoys taking a sack lunch on most days. I appreciate the opportunity to encourage her to consider healthy choices and to eat in moderation. And my pocketbook certainly appreciates her daily meals.
My son on the other hand doesn’t think it’s cool to eat a sack lunch and, now that he’s beginning high school, I’m certain there’s no way he will leave the house with a lunch box in hand! Last year his daily lunch choices consisted of chicken nuggets, French fries and a chocolate chip cookie – a difficult fact for his health-crazed mother to accept.
This year I plan to offset his unhealthy lunch choices with quick fix-it breakfast options. How about a bowl of oatmeal with honey and almonds? Would you like a berry yogurt smoothie? Let’s try one of those homemade cereal bars! Or why don’t you grab a banana on your way out the door? Here, put this box of granola bars in your locker for a snack between classes.
Yes, those are just some of the phrases that will soon bounce off my kitchen walls.
