  • Burglars have broken into the Wellington Recreation Center three times over the past two weeks. The latest was last weekend, which was discovered on Monday morning when people arrived for work.
Rec. Center director Cody White said they have tried to take preventative measures to keep people from breaking into their establishment.
“This hit’s home a little bit, we feel violated,” he said.
The string of break-ins started a couple of weeks ago when someone forced their way in through the back door.  The burglars managed to get the back door open and took video games, candy and a camera system.
Another break-in happened a few days later but nothing was missing.
White had a dead bolt lock installed on the door, but the thieves were not done.
Last weekend they used a prybar to get the back door open, working around the deadbolt. They damaged the frame of the door, and went further inside the facility this time.
They took keys and money boxes which held more than $300.
White said they later found the boxes behind the building and police took fingerprints.
Police Chief Tracy Heath said there have been more break-ins lately. He added a church on Botkin Street was also burglarized during the same time frame of the rec center burglaries.
Heath said it is likely it is the same person, or persons, doing the burglaries.
