Sellars Park was spilling over with Wellington pride last Thursday as football players and cheerleaders from 1st through 12th grade participated in the Crusader Club's annual hamburger scrimmage.
Parents like Nicole Zabel stated, "Oh the kids just love it, and I love having them in it. We're just so glad we have a great program like this for (our kids)." How do the kids feel? Well, 5th grader Chris Dawdy has a great time, "It's so much fun, and no, it doesn't hurt. Well, tonight it hurt a little when the 6th graders tackle you, but it's still fun."
Season passes are available to Crusader fans for all of this season's high school games, if you are interested in a family or individual pass, you can contact the high school for more information.
The Crusader Club was busily flipping and cooking hamburgers as quickly as they could to feed all the hungry fans and players. When asked how many were sold Coni Adams, vice president of Crusader Club, admitted "The hamburger feed isn't traditionally a huge money maker due to the fact that we feed every fall athlete – it is a fun tradition that is the kickoff for the fall sports season."
Adams did mention that much of the fund raising comes from concessions stand and shirt shack sales as well as memberships. "The last couple years, the main focus of the funds has been the WHS weight room."
The only purpose of the Crusader Club is to assist and advance WHS activities. If you are looking to get involved, they are always welcoming new members. You can join them on Mondays at noon at Big Cheese Pizza where they meet weekly. Membership forms and more information can be found online at http://wellington.cc
