For two-and-a-half quarters, Wellington looked like a far superior team to Goddard. But Goddard stormed back, and Wellington held on for a 34-28 win in its season opener in Goddard Friday. With 11 minutes to go in the third quarter, Wellington led 27-0. Goddard got two scores in the final minute to get within a touchdown.
Coach Tyler Ryan said he had a lot of players going both ways, and they got tired down the stretch, which allowed Goddard to get back in the game.
"Even at halftime I though we looked gassed. Some guys were cramping," he said.
Ryan was happy with the win but saw a lot of things that need work.
Ryan said his team needs better conditioning, and he hopes they see the value of working a lot during the offseason to get in top shape.
"We needed a win in our first game. There are a lot of things to fix, but I am proud of the guys that stepped up," Ryan said.
One thing that did not need fixing was the pass connection of Trevor Nance to Colin Reichenberger. The two combined for 10 completions, 269 yards and three touchdowns.
Reichenberger hauled in a 65-yard bomb down the sidelines for the first score in the first quarter. He blazed past the defense and caught a well-thrown ball in stride on his way to the endzone. Before the first quarter ended he caught another one, this one from 35 yards out.
Early in the final quarter Goddard cut the deficit to 27-14. Another long pass, this one from 66 yards out, from Nance to Reichenberger, put the Crusaders up 34-14.
Nance completed 12 of 18 passes for 272 yards, and scored on a 10-yard run. Nance also had an interception in the endzone that ended a Goddard scoring threat.
