  • South Haven survived a late rally and put on some late explosives to beat Norwich 54-38 last week in its opener.
The win was costly however, as starting quarterback Riley Blaylock was lost with an injured hand.
Coach David Hughes said Blaylock’s hand may be broken and he is planning on starting Anthony Hawkins at the spot next week. Hawkins was a starter at end, and Hughes is looking for a replacement this week.
South Haven may have its hands full this week when it hosts South Barber, another traditional power in eight-man football.
South Barber beat Pratt Skyline 46-20 in its opener last week.
Hughes said his team will have to stop the South Barber quarterback, or at least slow him down, to stay in the game.
“They are a good team. They have a good balance of rushing and passing,” he said.
South Haven has a lot of new players, and Hughes was pleased with what he saw.
The team did have a 22-0 lead in the second quarter, only to see Norwich come back and take a 30-28 lead with two minutes left in the third quarter. The teams traded touchdowns again, and Norwich led 38-36 with 10 minutes left.
From there South Haven took over, scoring three unanswered touchdowns to take the 54-38 win.
“We didn’t fold up, we hung in there. We just had mistakes and penalties, but we kept playing,” he said.
Before being injured, Blaylock completed five of eight passes for 189 yards and one touchdown. He also ran eight times for 17 yards and a touchdown.
J.T. Yunker ran for 157 yards on 23 carries and scored three times. Ray Parker ran 76 yards on 14 carries. Zach Pounds had 69 yards on seven carries and scored three times. Pounds also had 128 yards receiving on three catches.
Trevon Creed had a touchdown on a 28-yard reception, and Hawkins had one reception for 33 yards.
Hughes said Yunker also played well on defense, and he had an interception. The coach also said Wyat Conner had a good game at defensive end.
