  • Wellington used a strong running game, dominated the line of scrimmage, and beat Concordia 27-6 in the Crusader's home opener Friday.
It was the first time since 2009 that Wellington has started a season with a 2-0 record.
Last week Wellington had trouble getting its running game going and relied on its passing game. Concordia is a team that often relies on a running game and keeping possession of the ball, but it was the Crusaders doing that Friday.
Wellington rolled up 229 yards of rushing, led by Austin Dunn who had 133 yards and Connor Phelps with 87.
Phelps scored on runs of 24 and five yards, and hauled in a 21-yard pass from Trevor Nance for another score. Nance had the other touchdown on a two-yard run in the second quarter.
The Crusaders led 20-6 at the half and got another score early in the fourth. Last week Wellington got worn down at the end of the game and allowed Goddard to get back in the game. It was just the opposite this week as the Crusaders got stronger as the game went on and dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage especially in the second half.
Early in the game it looked like Concordia might control the game with its patient running attack. On its first possession, Concordia drove 55 yards in 10 plays and took up more than half the first quarter in getting its first touchdown. From that point Concordia fumbled four times and never mounted a serious scoring threat.
Wellington coach Tyler Ryan said the team did a much better job this week with blocking techniques. But the coach was not too happy to see the team not take advantage of its scoring opportunities. Twice it got turnovers in Concordia territory and did not score because of untimely penalties.
"It is just little things," that can cost you, he told the team after the game.
