Loews Boston Hotel was having a promotion at its bar–it was naming a drink after each of the two mayoral candidate and tabulating how many of each they sold.
And then someone at the Boston Herald, who was apparently shocked at the fact that the Hotel was naming a drink after Walsh, an alcoholic. Here’s what Loews said as quoted by the AP: “Loews Boston Hotel acknowledges the insensitivity of this recent promotion and have canceled it effective immediately…after being questioned b the reporter. Walsh’s campaign declined to comment.” Presumably, a number of politicians will offer their thoughts and prayers to Walsh’s family and Obama will fly to Boston at great expense to wallow in the story.
I just don’t get it. Part of being a mayoral candidate is being the butt of jokes and promotions, and presumably Walsh didn’t object. I just don’t get the insensitivity–the Hotel was not demanding that Walsh take part in the promotion, nor is there any reason to believe that struggling alcoholics would fall off the wagon just to support their boy.
It was a stupid reaction. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. If you don’t challenge things as stupid as Loews reaction, then they might even start to seem normal or sane. Shame on Loews for its reaction, and for the Herald for its part in this. Presumably, in the future, Loews will be banning women from its bars if a candidate is an admitted philanderer.
