Tip of the Week

We all admire fit celebrities, but how do we get bodies like theirs without ponying up the money for a trainer?

Getting fit actually starts at home and from the inside, says Joel Harper.

Harper, a celebrity personal trainer who also does house calls in New York City (joelharperfitness.com), offers tips to all his clients on how to maximize their potential.

“Listen to your inner dialogue,” Harper says. “Take responsibility for your thoughts. If you don’t like them, change them.”

More advice from Harper:

• After exercise, always stretch your muscles. “This is how you get long, lean muscles and remain tension-free,” Harper says.

• Don’t get bored. Find something new to learn, such as Tai Chi, Zumba or CrossFit — whatever works for you and keeps you interested in physical fitness.

• Get 7-8 hours of sleep a night. Harper says this is crucial in reaping the full benefits of exercise.

• Get enough protein. Average daily protein needs (grams per day) are your body weight in pounds divided by 2.2, multiplied by 1.5. For instance, if you weigh 150 pounds, your average daily protein intake should be about 102 grams.

• Get enough water. Similar to protein, take your body weight, divide by two and that’s how many ounces you should be drinking throughout the day. Exercising for an hour adds another 10 ounces of water you should consume.

• Don’t eat if you aren’t hungry.

• Be with happy people. “Dump negative influences and connect with proactive people that care,” Harper says. “You are the average of your five best friends.”
