My favorite season has arrived with chilled mornings, burnt-orange autumn leaves and a crispness in the air. Along with those seasonal changes come some of my favorite comfort meals. Last night I created Shepherd's Pie from scratch, which my family devoured despite the fact I replaced the beef with ground turkey. After browning the meat, I added diced carrots, chopped mushrooms and diced green onion. A rich gravy developed as I added flour followed by beef stock. The mixture was placed in a deep baking dish and topped with a layer of corn kernels and then a layer of mashed potatoes seasoned with garlic salt, butter, sour cream, milk and cheddar cheese. After baking the dish for 30 minutes, I served it with a hearty garden salad and french bread.
