Wellington 21, Clearwater 19
Wellington got the plays it had to have when it needed them and held on to beat Clearwater 21-19 Friday in Clearwater.
Wellington led 7-6 at the half, and led 21-13 in the third quarter. Clearwater cut the deficit to 21-19 early in the fourth. Wellington made a couple of good defensive stops down the stretch to hold on for the win.
The win puts the Crusaders at 1-0 in region play, with games against Mulvane and Winfield remaining. Winfield beat Mulvane 20-14 Friday.
One of the big plays for Wellington was a 37 yard touchdown pass from Trrevor Nance to Connor Phelps. Austin Dunn ran for 138 yards and a touchdown for the Crusaders.
Wellington is now 5-2 overall.
South Haven 68, Caldwell 26
South Haven scored early and often and outran Caldwell. The Cardinals led 20-8 after one quarter, and 40 - 8 at the half.
South Haven got its scores on drives that were made up of runs by J.T. Yunker and Anthony Hawkins.
Caldwell's first to scores came on long runs as Kellen Schmidt scored from 62, 50 and 33 yards out. Schmidt finished the game with 185 yards rushing.
Yunker ran for 233 yads on 15 carries for a 15.5 yards per carry average and five touchdowns. 15, 13, 31, 29 and 62 yards.
Parker Ray scored on a 49-yard run for South Haven in the first quarter.
South Haven had 405 yards rushing. The Cardinals attempted only one pass, which was incomplete.
Conway Springs 62, Belle Plaine 6
Conway Springs had little trouble with Belle Plaine and rolled to an easy win Friday. THe Cardinals had 15 different players carry the ball, and seven different players scored touchdowns rushing. Conway Springs also had two passing touchdowns.
Conway Springs had 464 yards rushing and 105 passing and did not punt. Belle Plaine had 47 yards rushing and 74 yards passing.
