  • Area volleyball teams head to regional meets Saturday, battling for a spot in the state tournament to be held the following weekend.
Wellington has battled to stay above .500 this season, and has lost some matches recently.
Coach Cherity Elder is trying to get her team to just relax and play, instead of thinking so much.
“It has been a real roller coaster. It’s all mental right now,” she said.
The team tends to play well for awhile, and then not so well for awhile.
“We do really well at practice. If we can get past the mental art and play that way, we will be in good shape,” Elder said.
The team has played evenly with some of the top teams in the area, and Elder said the team realizes it can play with those teams, but has had trouble getting over the hump.
She said the team started the year passing well, with not many errors, but has started having a lot more errors lately.
But she is hopeful they will relax and play within themselves more at sub-state.
Wellington will be going to Mulvane and will play Mulvane at 2 p.m. Other teams in that regional include Rose Hill and Winfield.
In Class 1A, Caldwell and Argonia are among the top – ranked teams in the state. Caldwell will play at the South Haven regional that includes Burden Central, Caldwell, Dexter-Cedar Vale, South Haven and Udall.
Argonia will be at the Chetopa regional, along with Buffalo-Altoona-Midway, Chetopa, Colony-Crest, Longton-Elk Valley.
Oxford will be at the Pratt-Skyline regional.
In Class 3A, Conway Springs is at the Garden Plain regional, with  Anthony/Harper-Chaparral, Cheney, Garden Plain, Haven, Hutchinson-Trinity, Kingman, Wichita-The Independent.
State tournaments for all classifications are Nov. 1-2.
