Upgrading to Windows 8.1 is no easy task. On Oct. 17, Microsoft officially released Windows 8.1 and RT 8.1 to the public. The software for both platforms was offered as free downloads via the Windows online store. The system was swamped and there were multiple glitches — problems that are not great confidence builders for Microsoft's struggling operating system business.

$22,261: The average price for a four-year degree at a state school during the 2012-13 year was $22,261. It was $43,289 for a private, four-year college, according to the College Board.
