Conway Springs had met Wichita Independent before in the regular season. In the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs Tuesday, the result was not much different as Conway Springs rolled to a 54-12 win.
Conway Springs vaunted wing-T attack scored early and often, rolling up a 47-6 lead at the half.
Travis Wood scored twice in the first quarter, on runs of one and eight yards. He had 54 yards on seven carries, but also scored twice on defense.
In a 15-second span of game time he scored twice. He recovered a blocked punt in the endzone for a score, then returned an interception 43 yards for another score.
Quarterback Dakota Finstead also had some big moments on offense. He scored on runs of 45, 53 and 65 yards to finish the night with 199 yards on only seven carries, giving him a whopping 28 yards per carry average.
Conway Springs did not attempt a pass, nor did it punt.
Luke Fisher also had a rushing touchdown for the Cardinals.
Conway Springs had 355 yards rushing on 36 carries for almost a 10 yard per carry average.
Conway Springs will play at 6 p.m. Saturday at Kingman. Kingman beat Halstead 12-0 Tuesday. Conway Springs is 10-0 and Kingman is 7-2.
Marais Des Cygnes Valley 48, South Haven 18
South Haven’s season came to a cold and wet end Tuesday night in Melvern, as the team lost 48-18 to Marais Des Cygnes Valley in the first round of the 8-man football playoffs.
The weather may have played a role, as South Haven had an uncharacteristic seven turnovers, and had 18 penalties.
South Haven ended the night with more total yardage, but the penalties and turnovers led to a lopsided score in the end.
Marais Des Cygnes Valley jumped out to a 22-0 lead before the first quarter was over with a long punt return and two touchdown passes.
South Haven got on the scoreboard early in the second on a 29-yard run by Anthony Hawkins. Another touchdown passing made the deficit 28-6 at halftime. Marais Des Cygnes Valley scored twice in the third to lead 42-6 before the quarter ended.
J.T. Yunker scored on runs of eight and 57 yards for South Haven, but the Cardinals could get no closer than 48-18.
South Haven was 0-9 passing with two intercepted. Yunker had 183 yards rushing on 31 carries. Hawkins accounted for 80 on 18 carries.
Zach Pounds had an interception for South Haven.
