The Argonia girls basketball team got off to a good start Friday with a 49-38 win over Attica. There were bright spots for the Class 1A second-ranked Lady Raiders, as well as some areas where more work is needed.
Haylea Hessman scored 24 and Faith Gaddie added 14 for Argonia.
"It was a good start for us. We need to work on consistency, but it was a good first game," coach Dixie Brewster said.
Early on it looked like it might get ugly as Argona led 10-0 late in the first quarter, but Attica wouldn't go away. Attica reeled off six straight points in the second quarter and got within six, and then trailed by 10 at the half.
Attica rebounded well, and gave Argonia very few second shots. They also played well on defense at times, but when Argonia got its fast break going, it was hard to stop.
Brewster praised her two leading scorers, who were starters last year. With injuries last year, the team has five players returning with starting experience, but also some freshmen coming up who can contribute.
While Attica was controlling the boards Argonia did shoot well to neutralize that area of the game.
"Attica was playing good defense and rebounding well, so it is a good thing we were shooting well," Brewster said.
She also noted her team had very few turnovers, "which is always a good thing in your opening game."
Attica 58, Argonia 43
On the boys' side, Attica le 16-5 after one quarter, and led by as much as 20 in the second quarter before taking a 28-10 lead at the half. Attica was led by Devon Newberry who had 17 points in the first half. He had four of the team's five 3-pointers in the first half.
