Bruce Springsteen & Steven Van Zandt

It’s that time of year again: the time when Christmas songs fill airwaves, elevators, and grocery stores! Each year I can’t help but notice Bruce Springsteen’s Santa Claus Is Coming To Town trickling out of speakers in places Bruce’s music rarely appears. For that reason alone this is my favorite time of year.

As you ponder the season of love and kindness, we at Blogness ponder Bruce, as we always do, and this time we pondered Bruce and Christmas music. Here’s our list of Christmas songs we’d like to hear Bruce perform. Some he has and some he has not. Let us know what you think. And if this is your time of year to celebrate, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

From Anne: “Run Run Rudolph is a great fit. Here’s the version I have in mind.”

Here’s Bruce performing Run Run Rudolph with Jon Bon Jovi:

From Susan: ” I started thinking about Pilgrim in the Temple of Love, and thought of Tom Waits’s song Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis. I think it would be great to see him all by himself on stage, sit down at the piano, and belt (growl) this one out.”

From Pete: “Brian Setzer included a couple of original songs on his Dig That Crazy Christmas LP with the Brian Setzer Orchestra, and I think Hey Santa would be a perfect rave-up for the current makeup of the E Street Band — wild horns, stinging guitars and Bruce and the band could go to town on the vocals and shout-back responses. Think the Sessions Band version of Open All Night, but with egg nog. There’s even a reference to ‘Uncle Roy!’”

From Leann: “When I watch Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra goofing off together during Marshmallow World it reminds me of happy Bruce grinning and playing on stage. Although Darlene Love has a great version of this song, I imagine Bruce channeling Frank Sinatra while performing this. What a trio Dean, Frank, and Bruce would have been!”

Here’s Darlene Love’s version; which would you prefer for Bruce?

From Deb: Stevie has already covered this one, so how about Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight)?

And, here’s Stevie Van Zandt’s cover.
