  • The Caldwell girls got a big lead early, and held on at the end to beat Argonia 52-49 Saturday in the Border Queen Tournament in Caldwell.
Kambree York had three three-pointers in the opening minutes, helping her team jump out to a 14-0 lead. She had 12 in the first quarter and Caldwell led 18-4 at the end of the period.
Calkdwell led 21-4 early in the second, and led 35-24 at the half.
"We started out aggressive," Coach Cory Ward said. "It was good to see us finally play like that."
The Blue Jays also shot the ball better than they had in their first three games. The first half was about as good as Caldwell has played, but Ward said he was a little disappointed in how his team let Argonia get back into the game.
Argonia got into foul trouble early as well, and had trouble hitting shots. But they put together a run in the third quarter and cut the deficit to seven going into the fourth.
Argonia got within two on a shot by Haylea Hessman with 30 seconds left. Caldwell hit a foul shot, and Argonia had a shot at a three-pointer as time expired.
Argonia coach Dixie Brewster credited Caldwell with shooting well, and said she was happy with the way her team fought back, even if it didn't catch up.
"We will have another shot at them," she said. The tournament game does not count in district play, but the teams will meet in district and possibly in the playoffs later.
"We had to adjust a lot," Brewster said. "We fought back and didn't give up, We stayed out of foul trouble and played hard.
Hessman led Argonia with 17 and Shelby McCoy scored 13. York had 23 and Tyann Isaacs had 10 for Caldwell.
