They're pretty cool, not just for recreation but also for research, which is why the city of Los Angeles is gearing up for a major construction project at a currently unused pier in San Pedro. Called AltaSea, it's projected to open in 2018, and when it does, it won't be just any old wave tank: it will be the world's largest, part of a massive marine research complex that aims to attract scientists from all over the world.  See full article.
