The attack on U.S. facilities in Benghazi was a political football the minute news of the deaths of four Americans reached Washington.  The political impact of the incident was an element in just about everything leading administration officials – and Republicans – said on the subject, from the infamous Susan Rice appearance on the Sunday talk shows in September 2012 to Darrell Issa’s performance on Meet The Press this morning.

But there are real facts and a true story behind the political posturing, and at some point reality has to catch up with politics.  Republicans in Congress have assumed the way to get at the facts behind the attack was to call witnesses before their committees.  Journalists approach it differently: they go to where the incident happened and talk to the people that witnessed it.  They don’t just quiz Americans on the public payroll about what they knew and when they knew about Rice’s MTP talking points.  They ask Libyans seen on surveillance cameras looting the embassy why they did it.

This morning’s exhaustive NYT account of the Benghazi attack, is a worthy, fact-based alternative to the politicized narratives that have distorted the public understanding for more than a year.  Will it make any difference?
