Now available on DVD is the new horror film Cassadaga.  Is it worth your time?  Is it full of psychics and mystery and scares?

Well...

Click the Rawr and I'll tell you.

The main problem with Cassadaga lies in that it either doesn't know what kind of movie it wants to be or that it tries to be too many.  It's part mystery, part slasher, part ghost story,  and all sides suffer for it.

It's not the acting, which for the most part is good from everyone involved.  It's just some weird choices that make the movie not as good as it could have been.  If the filmmakers had concentrated one one aspect of the film things would have been better if you ask me.

The story revolves around a girl, who is for some reason deaf, who moves to Cassadaga (some super psychic energy place, which barely plays into the plot).  She meets a guy they go see a psychic and she gets a vengeful ghost attached to her.  Oh and there is also a serial killer running round turning women into marionette dolls who said ghost wants our heroine to find (Shouldn't the psychic have been able to do this?).

There is not enough of the ghost to make this a ghost revenge movie and there is not enough of the serial killer, who is pretty creepy, to make it a straight serial killer movie and they blow the wad of who the killer is rather early for any savvy viewer so the mystery/thriller aspect is blown also.

The pieces are good throughout it's just that when they're all put together as a whole, things start to fall apart.   There are weird subplots that really should no even have been in the movie, I.E. the boyfriends custody battle.  All that serves is to get rid of him when the writer didn't know what else to do with him.

The ending, which I won't spoil, is a little too neat and clean for me.  Everything comes together to easily.   As I watched, I had high hopes for the movie, and despite what I said it isn't terrible.  It's just not great.

Maybe worth a watch on Netflix but I'm not sure I can justify telling anyone to drop money on it.

Cassadaga is available now.
